Sick leave during twin pregnancy

Congratulations on your twin pregnancy! When you’re pregnant with twins, it’s normal to experience more physical challenges as your body works harder to support two babies.

However, sick leave during a twin pregnancy depends on several factors, such as your health, your job type and the course of the pregnancy.

When do you typically need to take sick leave?
Many pregnant women with twins go on sick leave earlier than with a single pregnancy because twin pregnancies often cause more physical strain, such as fatigue, pelvic pain and increased risk of complications.

There is no set rule, but here are some general guidelines:

Physically demanding work: If you have a physically demanding job, it may be necessary to take sick leave as early as mid-pregnancy, often from week 24-28. This is because the body often has difficulty coping with the extra strain during this period.

Office work or less physically demanding work: If your work is less physically demanding, such as a sedentary office job, you may be able to work longer. However, many women take sick leave from weeks 28-30 as twin pregnancies often result in greater fatigue and risk of complications later in pregnancy.

Complications: If you experience complications such as pre-eclampsia, signs of potential preterm labour, severe pelvic pain or other complications, your doctor may take you off work earlier. Twin pregnancies are more prone to complications and the doctor will assess whether early sick leave or reduced working hours are necessary.

Sick leave due to multiple pregnancy: In Denmark, you are entitled to sick leave in connection with a multiple pregnancy if your body can no longer cope with labour or if there is a risk to you or your babies.

The doctor’s role
Your doctor or midwife will continuously assess your condition. If you feel overworked, tired or in pain, contact your doctor for an assessment. The doctor may issue a sick note if necessary or recommend reduced working hours.

What you can do yourself
Listen to your body. A twin pregnancy is harder on the body than a single pregnancy and it’s important to take breaks, rest and not overexert yourself. If you experience fatigue or pain, it’s often a sign that you should take it easy.

To summarise
When to take sick leave during a twin pregnancy depends on your body’s reactions and your work environment.

In general, sick leave often occurs earlier than with a single pregnancy, typically from week 24-30, especially with physically demanding work. Your doctor or midwife will help assess when it’s time to take sick leave to ensure the health of you and your twins.

Remember, every pregnancy is different and any symptoms may vary from person to person. If in doubt, always consult your own doctor.
