What should be in your changing bag when you have twins?
When you have twins, there are a lot of things to keep track of – especially when you leave home! A well-packed changing bag can make outings with your two little ones much easier and less stressful.
While it may feel like you need to double up on everything, there’s a smart way to do it so that you’re well prepared without lugging around a gigantic bag. Here’s a guide to what to pack in your changing bag when you have twins.
1. nappies – double up!
It goes without saying that you need nappies for both your babies. A good starting point is 4-6 nappies per baby, depending on how long you’ll be away. Keep in mind that it can be beneficial to have an extra pair, especially if your twins are newborns and change nappies more often.
2. Wet wipes
A large pack of wet wipes is a must. Wet wipes are not only for nappy changes, but also indispensable when little hands get sticky or when there are spills. Preferably choose a pack with a closure that keeps the wipes moist.
3 Changing mat
A foldable changing mat is essential when you’re out and about changing your twins. Many changing bags come with a built-in changing mat, but if not, you can buy one separately. This makes it easier to find a clean and comfortable place to change them wherever you are.
4. Changing clothes for both babies
When you have twins, it’s twice as likely that someone will spill, regurgitate or need a dry set of clothes. Pack at least one complete change of clothes per baby – bodysuit, trousers or jumpsuit, socks and possibly a small hat if the weather is chilly. If you want to be extra prepared, you can pack two sets per baby.
5. Pacifiers (if they use them)
If your babies use pacifiers, it’s a good idea to have a few extra in your changing bag. Pacifiers can easily get lost or fall on the floor, so make sure you have a backup. You could also consider a small container for the pacifiers to keep them clean.
6. Cloth nappies or bibs
Cloth nappies are a real lifesaver when you have babies who regurgitate or drool a lot. They can be used to wipe little faces, protect your clothes or even as an emergency nappy during changing. Pack 3-4 cloth nappies or bibs.
7. Food and drink
If you’re breastfeeding, you might not need to pack much here, but it’s always good to be prepared:
Bottles: If you bottle feed your twins, pack two bottles and the necessary amount of formula. Remember to pack a thermal bag to keep milk or water warm if necessary.
Nursing pads: If you’re breastfeeding, it’s a good idea to pack some nursing pads to avoid leaks.
For older babies who have started on solids:
Snacks: Light snacks such as fruit purees, corn sticks or small breads can keep your twins occupied and full.
Spoons and plates: If you’re feeding them on the go, it’s good to have baby-friendly crockery in your bag.
8. Feeding bottles and liquids (for yourself)
Keep yourself hydrated, especially if you’re breastfeeding. A bottle of water or a thermos of tea is essential. Staying well hydrated is crucial when you’re looking after two babies. Possibly a water bottle for the babies.
9 Cream and ointment
A small tube of zinc ointment or other nappy cream for red bottoms can be a lifesaver if irritation occurs. It’s also a good idea to have some regular moisturiser if your babies have dry skin.
10. Hand sanitiser
Although wet wipes can take the worst of it, it’s always a good idea to carry hand sanitiser to ensure your hands are clean before and after changing nappies or eating.
11. rubbish bags
Small bin liners are perfect for storing dirty nappies, wet clothes or used wipes until you can throw them away. They can also be handy for keeping dirty clothes separate from clean clothes in your bag.
12. Toys or entertainment
A few small toys, books or rattles can keep your twins entertained while you’re out and about. Make sure to choose items that can be easily cleaned if they end up on the floor.
Extra tips for the twin changing bag
Organise in sections: Consider using small bags or pouches to separate nappies, clothes and food so you can quickly find what you need without having to rummage through the whole bag.
Check your bag regularly: Get into the habit of topping up your bag when you get home, so you’re always ready to go again without having to stress about packing.
Choose the right changing bag: When you have twins, you’ll probably need a spacious bag with plenty of pockets. There are specialised changing bags for parents of twins, but many regular large changing bags will work just as well. Choose a changing backpack so you have both arms free for the babies!
Being well prepared with a well-packed nappy changing bag can make it easier to handle those little everyday adventures when you have twins. Remember that although it may seem like a lot at first, you’ll quickly get the hang of packing for two and soon it will feel like the most natural thing in the world!
